[7SP] John Scalzi quote

[Set in Both Sides Now. Lindsay is [livejournal.com profile] notso_average and used with permission from her mun who made a request for Sam/Lindsay future fic with the prompt “diaper.” Lucas is an NPC.]

“When you lose someone you love, you die too, and you wait around for your body to catch up.”

Of all the responsibilities he had taken on as a pseudo-father, the whole diaper changing thing wasn’t his favorite part.

He was getting better at it. The first few times he had tried were disasters, but things had gotten easier with practice, and while there were still a few mishaps here and there, Sam’s skill set was increasing. Dean was still better at this, but he had a lot of practice with Sam when he was younger. Regardless of how good he was getting, though, it still wasn’t his favorite thing. He doubted that anyone was fond of this end of the job though, so there wasn’t any use complaining there.

Lucas, however, couldn’t seem to help but be amused. Looking up at him with big blue eyes, he seemed intent to make Sam laugh or crack in some way. But at the end of the it all, Lucas was clean, clothed, and grabbing for Sam to pick him up, while Sam was obliging him, bracing the small boy on his shoulder as he carried him back to the living room where Lindsay was working.

“Hey,” he said as he sat down next to her, putting Lucas in his lap and letting him look around. “Make any progress?”

“A little,” she sighed, looking over at Lucas with a smile, before reaching forward and taking him off Sam’s hands. “Not much, but my head’s not really in it, so at least I got something done.”

Sam nodded slowly. He knew what day it was. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. He could still feel the way she missed him. It rolled off her in waves, and it was only worse now that every day she had a walking, smiling reminder of what she had lost. It wasn’t that she wasn’t good with Lucas. It was just that there was this slight edge of sadness every time she looked at him. Losing Don wasn’t a void that either man in her life could fill, and Sam knew from the beginning to not even try.

“You miss him, don’t you?”

“Every day,” she said softly, cradling her son in her arms and letting him play with her pen. Occasionally she would reach down and pull it away from him to keep it away from his mouth. “I look at Lucas, and I think of everything he’s missing—”

“I know,” Sam replied, sliding an arm around her shoulders. “But I’m sure he knows you’re taking care of him.”

“You think so?” she asked, looking back at him. “I mean, I know you’re into some weird stuff—”

“I have a lot of faith in the afterlife.” After everything he had seen in his lifetime, he couldn’t deny that there was something after death. “Wherever Don is, I’m sure he’s really happy with the way you’re raising his kid.” He paused. “Maybe not me and my involvement in it, but otherwise yeah.” He gave her a grin. “I think he’d be pretty pleased.”

She returned the smile before leaning into him a bit. “Well, if he doesn’t like you being around, he’s going to have to deal with it. Right now? I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Sam turned to her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head lightly. “I’m just glad I can help.”

She stayed close for a while, just enjoying the time with the three of them together. Then she glanced down at her watch and sighed. “I should get started on dinner. Can you—?” She shifted Lucas in her arms and he nodded.

“Yeah, sure,” he replied, picking him up and settling him back down on his lap. Lindsay headed to the kitchen, and he looked down at the little boy in his arms with a smile. “Alright, buddy. Whadaya wanna do now?”

Lucas looked up at him with a smirk. A few seconds later, Sam’s nose twitched with an all too familiar smell. He closed his eyes, before tipping his head back with a groan.

“Oh, come on.”
